ANAPANASATI – pronounced “An-a-pan-a-sah-tee.

meaning MINDFULLNESS of BREATHING

Anapanasati is a core meditation practice in Theravada, Tiantai and Chan traditions of Buddhism as well as a part of many mindfullness programs.

As a meditation teacher, this is the meditation technique I teach the most in my online  and offline meditation classes.

Where to practice Anapanasati Meditation ?

You will want to meditate in a relaxing space.

Your area should be quiet and peaceful, which is why Buddha instructed his monks to go into the forest in the Anapanasati Sutta. It is easy to get distracted when practising Anapanasati Meditation technique, so make sure that there are as few distractions as possible.

Also, consider lighting. The area should not be too light nor too dark.

And it should be a comfortable temperature. You don’t want to be shivering or sweating profusely when you meditate.

Posture:

Meditation is supposed to be done sitting, interlocking fingers, crossing feet, spine straight but with a natural curve and eyes closed softly.  If seriously unwell then can be done lying down.

Relax:

Give a command to your mind that i am going into the meditation so relax yourself. Any thought comes, allow it to come and bring your awareness back to the natural flow of In Breath and Out Breath. If still feeling distracted either start counting backwards 10…9…8…7….. 2…1 or bring your awareness towards your left and right nostril. start following the rhythm of your breath.
